Mom and dad, styled as rap royalty
The set is a living room dressed up for a superstar's music video: platinum records on the wall, gold lens flares, glitter in the air, haze from a smoke machine and a warm light from behind that outlines them in a glow.
Whoever is in the photo gets a thick gold chain and sunglasses pushed up on their head. The camera sits low and circles slowly, the angle music videos use to make someone look larger than life. The quieter your parent is in real life, the better this works.
Occasions, and what to type
Name the occasion and one thing the family always teases them about:
- Birthday: "Dad turns 60, still drives like it's 1985"
- Anniversary: "35 years married, still fighting over the thermostat"
- Retirement: "Mom's last night shift after 30 years as a nurse"
- Mother's Day or Father's Day: "Mom, the only one who knows where anything is"
The verse is written around it, in English or German.
Finding a usable photo of a parent
Most photos of parents are group shots. Each person needs a photo of their own with one adult in it, so crop a family picture down to one face, or ask for a selfie.
An older photo works if the face is sharp and turned toward the camera; they will rap at the age they are in the picture. Childhood photos are refused, because photos of minors are not accepted. Leave out photos with sunglasses on: the scene adds its own pair, pushed up on the head.
One parent, or both trading lines
One photo makes a solo. With a photo of each parent they become a rap duo: they take turns, and while one raps the other keeps their mouth closed and nods along. For a duo, 15 seconds gives each of them more lines than 10.
Keeping the surprise
Everyone in the photos has to agree to be in the video, so ask before you upload. You can ask without giving it away: "Can I use this photo for something for your birthday?"
Then play it at the dinner table or drop it in the family group chat. Portrait 9:16 fits a phone screen. Download the file rather than sending the link, because the link can expire.
